Terms & Conditions

These terms govern your use of trothos, operated by the trothos team (“trothos,” “we,” “us”). By creating a ledger, witnessing a fact, or otherwise using the service, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use trothos.

1. What trothos is

trothos is a service for recording your work as plain, verifiable facts, and having them verified by the people who witnessed it. A verified fact is designed to be a permanent public record on your ledger. trothos is not an employment verification service, a background-check provider, a credentialing body, or a substitute for official records; it reflects what a named witness has confirmed, and nothing more.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old to create a ledger. By creating an account, you represent that you meet this requirement and that everything you tell us about yourself is accurate. trothos is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

3. Your account

You sign in with a one-time link sent to your email, no passwords. You are responsible for the security of your email inbox, for keeping your sign-in link private, and for the accuracy of what you record. You may hold one account per person. Your handle (your public URL) is claimed once and is permanent afterward; a deleted handle is retired and can never be reclaimed by you or anyone else.

4. Honest records & acceptable use

You agree that you will only:

  • Record work you actually did, described accurately.
  • Name witnesses who genuinely saw the work and can speak to it.

You agree that you will not:

  • Fabricate, exaggerate, or misattribute a fact.
  • Name a witness who did not consent to being contacted, or attempt to witness your own fact under another identity.
  • Impersonate another person or organization, or claim a handle in bad faith to block or mislead someone else.
  • Use trothos to harass, defame, or retaliate against a witness or any other person.
  • Probe, scrape, rate-limit-test, or otherwise attempt to circumvent the technical protections on the service.

Institutional names, claiming another company's name, and offensive handles are blocked at signup. Violating this section is grounds for content removal, account suspension, or termination, at our discretion.

5. Witnessing

Witnessing is voluntary and requires no trothos account. A witness may verify a fact, dispute it, withdraw a prior verification, or later confirm a fact they previously denied, all from the link they were sent, without creating a password or profile. A witness is solely responsible for the accuracy of their own verification; trothos does not independently confirm the truth of any fact. Verifications are recorded permanently once made, subject to the one-time withdrawal and dispute mechanics described in the product.

6. Permanence & your control

Verified facts are designed to be permanent, since that permanence is what makes them worth trusting. You may nonetheless reset your entire ledger or delete your account at any time from your dashboard, which removes your records for good. This action cannot be undone. Deleting your account does not retroactively alter verifications you made as a witness on someone else's ledger; those remain, with your identity handled as described in our Privacy Policy.

7. Fees

trothos is currently free to use, including claiming a permanent handle. We may introduce paid features or membership tiers in the future; if we do, we'll describe them clearly before you're asked to pay, and any free features you already rely on won't be taken away retroactively without notice.

8. Ownership & license

You own the facts you record. By posting a fact to your ledger, you grant trothos a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to host, display, and transmit it as part of operating the service (for example, sending it to a witness, or rendering it on your public ledger page). We own the trothos name, logo, and the software and design of the service itself; nothing here grants you rights to those.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

trothos is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any fact, verification, or witness identity is accurate.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, trothos and its team will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses, arising from your use of, or inability to use, the service, even if we've been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms or the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or one hundred US dollars.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold trothos harmless from any claim, demand, loss, or damages, including reasonable attorneys' fees, arising out of your use of the service, your violation of these terms, or your violation of any right of a third party, including a witness you named.

12. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to trothos at any time, with or without cause, including for a violation of Section 4. You may stop using trothos, or delete your account, at any time. Sections of these terms that by their nature should survive termination (including Sections 9 through 13) will survive.

13. Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles. Before filing a claim against trothos, you agree to first contact us at hello@trothos.com so we can try to resolve it informally.

14. Changes

trothos is provided “as is,” without warranty beyond what Section 9 describes. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service, and we may update these terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we'll update the date at the top of this page; continued use of trothos after a change means you accept it.

15. Miscellaneous

If any provision of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest remain in full effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. These terms, together with our Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy, are the entire agreement between you and trothos regarding the service. You may not assign your rights under these terms; we may assign ours in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
